How to Remove Glue From a Concrete Floor

How to Remove Glue From a Concrete Floor

Pulled up an old floor and found a slab covered in glue? You're not alone. Glue residue is one of the most common surprises we see under Sacramento floors. It has to come off before your new floor goes down.

Why the Glue Has to Go

New flooring needs a clean, flat surface. Old glue makes lumps that show through LVP. It can keep new adhesive from bonding. Some old adhesives react with new ones and stay soft.

Step One: Figure Out What Kind of Glue It Is

  • Carpet glue. Usually yellow or tan. Often gummy. Common in rentals and offices.
  • Vinyl or VCT adhesive. Thin, often clear to brown.
  • Hardwood adhesive. Thick and hard. Often left in trowel ridges.
  • Black mastic. Black, tar like. Common under older tile and VCT.

Stop if you see black mastic in an older home. Older black cutback mastic can contain asbestos. Get it tested before you scrape, grind or sand it. Our asbestos floor tile guide covers what to do.

The Methods

Scraping. A long handled floor scraper works for small spots of soft glue. For whole rooms, pros use walk behind or ride on scrapers. See our post on floor scraping.

Grinding. A concrete grinder with the right discs takes hard adhesive down to clean concrete. It's the most reliable way to get a slab install ready. It also makes a lot of dust without a HEPA vacuum hooked up.

Solvents and removers. Some adhesive removers soften glue so it scrapes off. They can be slow and messy, and some leave residue your new adhesive won't like. Check your new floor's install guide before using any chemical.

DIY Tips If You Try It

  • Test a small area first.
  • Keep the room ventilated if you use any remover.
  • Wear eye protection and a proper dust mask.
  • Don't dry sand or grind unknown black adhesive.
